Course Scheduling

Academic Policy 01.03.006, Scheduling Classes

Academic Policy 01.03.001, Centralized Classroom and Event Planning

The new daily class schedule is effective for spring 2026 courses and is based on a class length of 55 minutes for Monday-Wednesday-Friday classes and 80 minutes for Monday-Wednesday, Tuesday-Thursday, and Wednesday-Friday classes, with 20 minutes between classes.  Courses that meet one day a week are scheduled in 160-minute blocks and cannot meet between 11:35 am and 2:15 pm except on Fridays.

Please note that this change in the new daily class schedule only applies to spring and fall semesters beginning with spring 2026. Summer semester’s daily class schedule is not affected by this change.

Please see the tables below for more information.

If a department wishes to schedule a course outside of the new daily class schedule periods, a request must be submitted following the procedure on the Scheduling Off the Daily Class Schedule page.

Questions regarding the new daily class schedule should be directed to regsched@uga.edu.

Course Scheduling Tool

The Office of Institutional Research and the Office of the Registrar have collaborated to create a new Course Scheduling Tool designed to assist schools and colleges in maintaining compliance with the New Daily Class Schedule policies going into effect spring 2026.

Three reports related to these policies are available in the Course Scheduling Tool:

  • Course Distributions by Day
  • Primetime & Heatmap by Day
  • Average Enrollment and Allowable Enrollment

The Office of the Registrar will hold training sessions for using the new tool.

Questions regarding the Course Scheduling Tool as well as exceptions to scheduling off the Daily Class Schedule can be directed to regsched@uga.edu.

FAQs

When will the new daily class schedule be effective?

The new daily class schedule will be effective for spring 2026 courses. Spring and summer 2026 scheduling opens July 1, 2025.

What are the benefits of the new daily class schedule?

The new daily class schedule allows various options for course scheduling, including a two-day 80-minute period, which is preferred by many instructors and students. The new schedule provides greater flexibility to students in their scheduling, increases classroom utilization across the week, encourages class times other than Tuesday-Thursday, and allows slightly longer classes to meet.

Can a department schedule classes outside of the daily class schedule periods?

Off-schedule requests require approval prior to scheduling. The procedure to submit the request is available on the Scheduling Off the Daily Class Schedule page.

Can a department schedule a section that overlaps between periods?

No, this would be considered an off-schedule request and would require approval prior to scheduling.

When are ‘prime time periods’?

Prime time periods start between 9:55 am – 2:35 pm (time periods 2-4) and are the most popular class scheduling times. No more than 60% of the total number of classes scheduled by the unit for that day should be within the prime time periods.

How would scheduling after 6:00 pm work?

Faculty may schedule classes after 6:00 pm in the manner that best suits the course.

What is an “academic unit” as referred to the new scheduling policies? Does it apply to either a department or a school/college depending on how they are managed?

An “academic unit” refers to a department. If there is not a department, then “academic unit” refers to the school/college.

Are there any changes to the summer schedule?

No. The new daily class schedule does not affect the summer schedule. Summer will continue to have a separate schedule from fall and spring.
