Veterans Educational Benefits in the UGA Office of the Registrar monitors enrollment and academic progress of veteran students to ensure compliance with VA requirements. The Office of the Registrar does not determine benefit eligibility or access Department of Defense VA records.

Eligibility

Veterans Educational Benefits submits initial enrollment certifications electronically to the Department of Veterans Affairs via the VA Enrollment Management System before each semester begins.

Note: Out-of-state students utilizing VA Educational Benefits should review Residency Classification and Waivers.

All UGA programs and majors are approved by the State Approving Agency for VA educational benefits. Students should contact va@uga.edu for guidance if they are not enrolled in a degree program.

Eligible students must be:

  • A degree-seeking student at UGA, or
  • A transient student pursuing a degree at another institution.

Apply for VA Educational Benefits

Change in Status

The number of enrolled credit hours determines benefit level. Any changes to enrollment status, such as adding or dropping courses, are reported promptly to the VA.

Students must notify UGA Veterans Educational Benefits of any of the following changes:

  • Adding, dropping, or withdrawing from courses.
  • Being called to active duty.
  • Refraining from certification for a particular semester.

Priority Registration

The University of Georgia offers priority registration for any veteran/active duty/reserve service member who submits proof of service (e.g., DD-214 (Submit via SendFiles to skydev@uga.edu)) to the VA Certifying Official.

Called to Active Duty

Students who receive emergency orders for active duty while enrolled OR after admission but prior to the semester’s start date must submit a copy of the orders to the Office of Student Care and Outreach.

DoD Tuition Assistance (TA)

Active Duty, Reserve, or National Guard members using TA should contact the Bursar’s Office at 706-542-6773 for processing benefits. Military-connected students using TA should receive approval from a Military Educational Service Officer (ESO) or counselor prior to enrolling.
